Basketry development programme

Weaving Futures
Our basketry initiative lies at the heart of ASIGE’s mission in combining skills development, income generation, and employment creation for women and young people across Northern Ghana. Launched in 2017 with just 30 women weaving under a tree in the Sumbrungu community, the programme has since grown to engage over 450 artisans across seven communities in the Upper East Region: Sumbrungu, Feo, Bongo, Vea, Bolga Soe, Azimsum, and Kalbeo.

Artistry from the Heart of Communities
Many of these women were previously engaged in street hawking, forced to migrate to the South in search of work and often leaving their children behind, disrupting their access to education. Through basket weaving, they now have a stable and dignified source of income that enables them to care for their families and remain active in their communities.
In Sumbrungu, we have established a dedicated weaving centre that accommodates over 200 women and allows for year round work, rain or shine. Plans are underway to construct similar shelters and improved sanitation facilities in other participating communities to support the health and productivity of our weavers.

Cross-cultural collaboration
Ghana × Scotland
In 2024, ASIGE UK partnered with ReTweed/International Tartans, a social enterprise in Eyemouth, Scotland, that trains rural women in textile work. Together, we co-created a unique product line by using Scottish tartan woven by women in Eyemouth at International Tartans as the inner lining of ASIGE's ladies’ bags. This partnership is a celebration of cultural exchange, fusing Ghanaian and Scottish heritage into a shared story of empowerment, resilience, and artistry.
